While Key West High School has an illustrious athletic history in all sports, its record on the baseball diamond is its most outstanding accomplishment.
During the 60 years since 1950, Key West High School baseball teams have won 1048 games and lost 409 for a remarkable. 719 winning percentage. Eleven times the Conchs have been the State Baseball Champions in various classes and on three other occasions were state runner-ups. No other school in Florida has won eleven state titles in baseball. In addition, Key West can boast of two sectional, eleven regional and twenty-four district championship trophies.
Five former Conch players have gone on to play in the Major Leagues: John “Boog” Powell, Carl Taylor, Vic Albury, and Randy Sterling, while another, Ritchie Garcia, was an American League Umpire. Khalil Greene is a current major leaguer with the Texas Rangers.
Many others left KWHS to play in the minor leagues and at universities and community colleges throughout the country.ย All who have played for the Conchs have had a part in building Key West High School’s outstanding baseball tradition. (updated 2013)
